| Education: (All institutions attended and degrees or credentials earned) | Masters of English Education, Queens College, 2009, Magna Cum Laude Masters’ Thesis: “Effective Grammar Instruction” Many English teachers are challenged by the lack of time to teach non-tested standards, and in many states, grammar is not tested beyond infrequent standardized writing tests. Due to time shortages and infrequent focus on tests, many teachers choose to mostly ignore grammar instruction to the detriment of their students’ communication skills. This research project sought to test three separate grammar instruction strategies using mixed media, students’ writing, and direct instruction, to determine which provided the greatest benefits in a limited time. In the end, a mixed methods approach produced the greatest results. B.A. English, Winthrop University, 2002, Magna Cum Laude Honors Thesis: “Grammar Instruction: Implications in the Modern Classroom” An important question in English education has bounced around the minds of great people since English became a formally taught language: how do we teach grammar the “right way?” Hundreds of reformations and “new” ideas have appeared, but often to no avail because new ideas were often just old ones in disguise. Mixed methods approach between direct and contextual instruction provides the greatest benefits in teaching grammar in the modern 6-12 classroom. |
