Teaching and Research Interests: My research objectives revolve around generating results and developing skills that will support my career goal of tenured professorship. In the long term, I plan to continue my current research focus on ecology/physiology related Legionella work bridging the fields of engineering, microbiology, and public health. In my scholarship, I aim to pursue a combination of relatively conventional projects and those with a more niche or risk/reward aspect, an example of the latter being my current work on automobile windshield washer fluid as a source of legionellosis transmission. I also hope to continue to bridge my research and education/outreach work, specifically through projects involving the participation of under-represented researchers and students. I plan to advance my career in academia, while also serving in outreach capacities, such as on advisory committees or specialty group boards for water-borne and air-borne pathogens. Throughout my career, a large emphasis will remain on bridging multiple STEM disciplines and working to improve communication between research, industry, and the lay public. My research efforts examining microbiological aspects of the water crisis in Flint, MI, along with the related scientific communication efforts, reflect this goal. In addition to microbiology-based experiments, recent research interests of mine have branched out to include innovative approaches to STEM education, both for college and K-12 learners, including efforts to enhance college preparation for students in the Central Georgia region.
