Dr. Greg George, Oliner Professor in Free Economics

Through the generous support of Debra Oliner and Henry Oliner, a Trustee of the MGA Foundation, Middle Georgia State University named Dr. Greg George the Oliner Professor in Free Economics in January 2024. Dr. George, a Professor of Economics at MGA since 2001, was selected for the endowed chair in recognition of his extensive work in applied economic analysis, policy engagement, and teaching grounded in real-world markets.

"Professionally, it recognizes a body of work focused on applied economic analysis and policy engagement," Dr. George said. "Personally, knowing the donors who established the professorship makes being awarded the chair even more meaningful." He views the Oliner Professorship as a platform to better integrate research, teaching, and public engagement, while expanding the university’s visibility within policy and business communities.

Dr. George is particularly proud of the applied research conducted through the Center for Economic Analysis, which he co-founded in 2005 and now directs. Both the Center and the endowed distinguished chair were established through the Oliners’ generosity and commitment to advancing economic education and research at MGA. His work has informed state policy discussions and regional economic development decisions. Recent highlights include media appearances as a free-economics expert, white papers on current issues, commissioned studies for local governments, and regulatory initiatives.

As an educator and public speaker, Dr. George emphasizes careful analysis, historical context, and evidence-based thinking. He hopes his legacy will be a university culture that values applied research, intellectual curiosity, and meaningful engagement beyond campus—and a broader understanding of how economics shapes decisions, policies, and well-being.

Looking ahead, Dr. George is excited about economic development research at the municipal and state levels—work that brings theory and practical decision-making together to strengthen communities.
