Charlie Agnew is an artist and a great teacher. This previous recipient of the former Middle Georgia College’s teaching excellence award is our latest MVP!

Job Title: Associate professor of art & Peacock Gallery director.

Degrees: Master of Fine Arts in Painting, University of Memphis; Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts, Bluefield College.

Year he joined the Middle Georgia State College (MGC) faculty: 2004.

Some of his teaching career highlights are … Achieving the Middle Georgia College Teaching Excellence Award for 2009 – 2010; being the commencement speaker for Middle Georgia College’s graduation in 2011; being faculty sponsor of the Student Art League and helping lead them to win the 1st Place Outstanding Club Award for Middle Georgia College for 2 years in row (2010-2011 & 2011-2012). And, “At least once a year, I receive communication from students saying I have enriched their lives in some way.”

He enjoys teaching at Middle Georgia State because … “The students I work with come from a variety of backgrounds and are hardworking and enthusiastic about their artwork. Also, Middle Georgia College was the first place to hire me in a full-time, tenure-track position after I had taught in adjunct and visiting professor positions for several years.”

His favorite course to teach is … “Two-Dimensional Design (ARTS 1020). It is also the first class I taught in graduate school. I love the variety of projects and mediums that are used in the class. This is an important class that shapes how students look at things artistically and sets the foundations of how art students deal with the compositional elements and principles behind their work.”

One thing people don’t know about Middle Georgia State is … “The Cochran campus has a really great art exhibition space in Russell Hall called the Peacock Gallery that shows national, regional and student artists. A gallery talk and reception with the artist is held in conjunction with each show.”

One thing people don’t know about him is … “The first job I had was as a sexton (custodian) at a local church during high school.”

In his spare time he likes to … “Collect comic books, watch & read sci-fi & adventure (Doctor Who, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc.), go camping & canoeing, hang out with my family and wait…what spare time?”

The one person he’d most like to meet is … “Leonardo da Vinci because the man was brilliant, and I could learn so much from him.”

If he wasn’t a college professor he would be … “A camp director, because much of summertime during my 20s was spent working in camps, and there’s nothing that brings me more peace than camping in the outdoors. Or I might be a hot dog restaurant owner because there’s nothing better than a great hot dog!”
