Middle Georgia State College students are invited to take part in a business plan competition that could net them prize money to help turn their ideas into realities.

In an effort to encourage local entrepreneurship by students and to attract young professionals to remain in Central Georgia, the College Hill Alliance and a number of colleges and universities in the region, including Middle Georgia State, are collaborating on a business plan competition for students enrolled during the 2013-2014 academic year. Participants may compete as individuals or as a team. Teams will not be subject to a size limit.

The prizes are as follows:

• 1st place - $10,000
• 2nd place - $3,000
• 3rd place - $2,000

Semifinals will be held at Middle Georgia State in mid-March, 2014, and the judges will choose the best individuals or teams to enter the finals, scheduled for April 5 at Mercer University. The website where participants can register will soon be live.

To compete in the semifinals, individuals or teams need to deliver:
• A complete business plan
• A business model “canvas” (see http://www.businessmodelgeneration.com/canvas)
• Investor pitch PowerPoint deck

For the finals, the needed materials are:
• An executive summary (3-5 pages)
• Videotaped business pitch (2 minutes)
• Completed application

Final details of the competition are being worked out as far as judging criteria and other requirements, but interested students are encouraged to begin now to think creatively about ideas they would like to transform into real business opportunities.

Middle Georgia State students interested in this opportunity may contact Dr. Simone T.A. Phipps-Prieto, assistant professor of management, at simone.phipps@mga.edu or 478-471-2799.
