The Duke Report – 11/18/13

The second week of November started and ended well for Middle Georgia State College athletics. The men’s and women’s teams both picked up wins while football got a big win to finish the season.

Women’s Basketball: The women’s team picked up a win in their only game of the week against Brewton Parker’s (JV) team on 11/11. They won the game 70-49 and were led by Va’Queshia Hall (Howard HS) with 17 points and 9 rebounds along with Deundria Clark (Dutchtown HS) with 10 points. Jade’mone Jones (Beach HS) added 9 points along with 12 rebounds and 3 blocks for the game.

Men’s Basketball: The men’s team started the week off with a win 82-49 over the Brewton Parker (JV) team following the women’s win. The men were led by Roshaun Milline (Milledgeville, GA) with 19 points and 7 rebounds while Brandon Ingleton (Woodstock, GA) added 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jamaal Anderson had 10 points and 9 rebounds while Rashard Cabane (Covington, GA) chipped in 8 points and grabbed 8 boards. Javaris Hooks(Americus, GA) led the team with 6 assists. The Knights faced USC-Salkehatchie on Wednesday night in a close game that favored USC-Salkehatchie 80-76. The Knights were led by Ingleton with 17 points and another 12 rebound performance while Hooks got 15 points and 10 assists and Jalen Brown (Brunswick, GA) contributed 11 points to the cause.

Football: The program entered the week with a 9-0 record and retained number 1 in the National Club Football Association (NCFA), look to reach the NCFA National Championship game on December 7 in Salem, VA. The Knights faced Georgia Prep Sports Academy out of Atlanta, GA in Eastman, GA on the 16th in front of a crowd of 446. Led by Coach Dustan Jump and QB Kion Button (McIntosh County Academy), the Knights stunned the prep school who is sprinkled with NCAA Division I talent with a 21-0 win to finish the regular season undefeated at 10-0. Button went 14-36 passing for 195 yards and 1 touchdown while rushing for another. Quez Mahoganey (Wilcox County) pulled in the only receiving touchdown along with 5 total catches for 95 yards. Rico Lyons (Mary Persons High) added 16 carries for 106 yards and a TD. The defense was led by Dominique Jordan (Camden County HS) and Monty Wright (Radford HS, Honolulu, HI) who each racked up 7 tackles and 3.5 sacks while Jordan added a forced fumble. Quintavious Martin (Manchester HS) with 6 tackles and 2 sacks and Marcus Brown (Dodge County HS) who had 1 interception for 47 return yards. Jatavious Owens (Perry HS) also had a big day with 2 tackles, an interception, forced fumble, and fumble recovery.

Basketball: The men’s and women’s basketball teams participated on 11/15 with the Bleckley County Elementary School fundraiser “Shoot Hoops, Not Drugs” in the 11th year of the event. Women’s head coach Anderson Ligon stated, “Our coaches and players look forward to this fun and very important community service event every year.” The students in grades 3, 4, and 5 each raise money at to reach different levels and allow them to participate in the event. The players ran relay races and spent time with the kids handing out snacks, shooting, catching alley-oops, giving instruction, and signing some autographs for each of the groups of kids. The event is organized through the Communities in Schools/Family Connection (non-profit association) and BCES while the team gives time to work with the kids. The event raised over $7,000 that goes towards programs such as after school tutoring and other academic support. The purpose of the Communities in Schools/Family Connection program is to help provide services to kids in the community that help the kids stay on track to graduate on time by bringing in outside resources. Baseball: The Knights baseball program had seven players sign National Letters of Intent on the first day of the signing period to go to NCAA Division I or II schools. INF Spencer Duffie, RHP Tyler Graham, and 1B/C Andrew Kelley all signed with Georgia Southern. RHP Corey Kafka signed with the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, FL. RHP Brock Turner signed with Kennesaw State University. LHP Caleb Weaver signed with Armstrong Atlantic in Savannah, GA. RHP Justin Flores signed with South Alabama in Mobile, AL.
