Popular communications professor LaVette Burnette sees teaching as a privilege.

Full Name:
LaVette M. Burnette.

Residence: Cochran.

Originally From: Louisville, Ky.

Job Title: Associate Professor of Communication Studies.

Degrees: Master of Arts in Communication from Western Kentucky University in 2001;
Bachelors of Arts in Corporate and Organizational Communication from Western Kentucky University in 1998.

Year she began teaching at Middle Georgia State (MGC): 2008.

Some of her teaching career highlights are … “I have the privilege to teach students how to share thoughts and beliefs. My greatest accomplishment is when I witness a student shed fear and become a fearless speaker. I build self-confidence that ultimately transforms our students. Teaching is synonymous with transformation. As long as we are learning, we are changing. I pride myself on the ability to challenge my students to be more than they can ever imagine.”

If she wasn’t a college professor … "I would be a life coach. So much of what I do is hinged on interpersonal relationships and effective communication skills. I love the idea of helping people reach personal goals. “

In her spare time she likes to … "Write on love, feminism, personal growth and beauty. I blog, write poetry, sketch and write as therapy. I find comfort in being creative through photography, fashion, dance, hair and scrapbooking.”

One thing people don’t know about her is … "I have lived many lives and faces. I worked as secretary, welfare officer, babysitter, center director and now I am a professor. All of the many jobs I had lead me to this point in life.

‘Times change and so must I. We all change. When you think about, it we’re all different people all through our lives and that’s OK. That’s good. Gotta keep it moving, so long as you remember all the people that you used to be. I will not forget one line of this, not one day, I swear.

I will always remember when the Doctor was me.’ - Matt Smith as The Doctor

in Time of the Doctor, Doctor Who.

“This quote describes my love affair with Dr. Who and the sci-fi genre. I am a proud Whovian and a glamorous geek. The quote also illustrates how I have many faces besides a professor. The quote spoke to me as I watched this episode. I find joy in my moments with others and relish in the opportunity to do this every day. This is why I appreciate Doctor Who so much. He (regardless of his face) enjoys the moment in front of him. He marvels at the task before him and uses creativity to find his way out of difficult situations. He shows me how to love what I do and be all that I am. I encourage whoever reads this to be all of your faces, embrace all of who you are and share the magnificence that is you.”
