MGA’s Clayton Chosen as VP/President-Elect of Georgia Council of Graduate Schools

She was elected during the spring 2016 GCGS conference in Savannah.
“I’m honored to represent MGA and thrilled about the opportunities it gives us to promote the University’s new graduate degrees,” Clayton said.
Middle Georgia State just launched its first two graduate degrees: a Master of Science in Information Technology that now has three concentrations - Information Security/Digital Forensics, Health Informatics and Software Development – and a Master of Science in Nursing with an emphasis in Adult/Gerontology Acute Care to train Nurse Practitioners. Both degrees are offered completely online. Other graduate programs are in the works.
Middle Georgia State is a member of the GCGS, an organization of more than 20 institutions of higher learning, both public and private, founded to represent and advocate for the improvement and advancement of graduate education in the state of Georgia.
For the academic year 2016-2017, Clayton will serve as vice president of GCGS, then assume the role of president the following year.
Clayton attended the GCGS Conference in April with several other members of the MGA Graduate Studies team, including Dr. Kevin Cantwell, interim provost; Chris Nylund, Graduate Studies librarian; Melinda Rodgers, Enrollment Services project manager; and faculty members Dr. Kendra Russell of the School of Nursing and Dr. Jennifer Breese of the School of Information Technology.
MGA administrators, faculty and staff presented on topics ranging from starting a Graduate Studies Council and planning thesis primers for new graduate students to recruiting and recommending students for graduate study.
In July, Clayton will return to Savannah to attend the national Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) weeklong Summer Workshop and New Deans Institute. The CGS, based in Washington, D.C., is the only national organization in the U.S. dedicated solely to the advancement of graduate education and research.
Also an associate professor of English, Clayton joined the Middle Georgia State faculty in 2007. She holds a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis.
