The School of Business is rolling out a new concentration in financial economics in fall 2020. The concentration is a new specialty area that students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration can choose.

“This new concentration will help our students be ‘business ready’ upon graduation,” said Dr. Steve Morse, MGA’s School of Business dean.  “The study of financial economics provides a tool kit of skills for financial and economic analysis and decisions impacting growing industries in the regional economy and beyond.”

The concentration includes three new courses:

FINA 3120 – Advanced Corporate Finance. In this class, students will gain deep understanding of a broad range of topics concerning financial decision-making areas for modern corporations and some selected topics in financial theory.

FINA 4120 – Investments. This course is designed to serve investors who are (or will be) actively developing and monitoring their own investment portfolios.

ECON 4110 – Applied Data Analysis. This class is an overview of quantitative and qualitative data analysis.  Special emphasis is placed on thinking statistically, evaluating assumptions, and developing practical skills for real-life applications in business.

Dr. Yaseen S. Alhaj-Yaseen, School of Business associate professor, said the courses will  add an element of advanced applied financial data analysis many employers are seeking.

The field of financial economics offers a broad and varied range of employment opportunities. For example:

  • Real estate developers
  • Treasurers and controllers
  • Financial managers
  • Budget, credit and financial analysts
  • Personal finance advisors
  • Loan officers
  • Risk management specialists
  • Investment underwriters
  • Fraud investigators

Other concentrations available in the B.S. in Business Administration are accounting; general business; marketing; and management.
