MGA’s Dr. Kevin Floyd Receives Ben Bauman Award For Excellence

Dr. Kevin Floyd, associate dean and professor of information technology at Middle Georgia State University, received the Ben Bauman Award for Excellence at the recently held 61st annual International Conference for the International Association for Computer Information Systems (IACIS). The Ben Bauman Award recognizes excellence and service of faculty to their profession, university, and community.

Floyd’s teaching interests include web technologies, database design and development, leadership in IT, and research methods. He has published numerous articles in the areas of cybersecurity, leadership and ethics, and instructional technology. He has presented his research findings at conferences nationally and internationally. At MGA, Floyd’s professional accomplishments include working and mentoring junior faculty with research projects and teaching best practices, helping lead the development of the University’s graduate programs – a Master of Science and a Doctor of Science in Information Technology. Under his leadership, the University has received the Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CD) designation from the National Security Agency (NSA).

In 2019, Floyd served as project manager for the Wi-Fi Macon project, a $40,000 local grant to implement and install public Wi-Fi in downtown Macon as part of the city’s revitalization efforts. He served as co-principle investigator of a $1.3 million NSF multi-institutional award that resulted in building a state-of-the-art cyberforensics lab for the School of Computing at MGA. This grant also included numerous security training and presentations at various universities and the community. He currently serves as the secretary of the executive board and as the IIS editor to the International Association for Computer Information Systems (IACIS). He is also the web administrator for the IACIS and is an active reviewer for the National Security Agency (NSA) Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) program.

Floyd is a recipient of the prestigious Director’s Award from the IACIS for his many years of service and dedication to the profession. He has been recognized with University awards for service, academic achievements, and research/scholarship, including several “best paper” awards and an executive leadership certificate from the University System of Georgia’s Executive Leadership Institute.

Floyd holds an Ed.D in higher education administration from Georgia Southern University; an M.S. in applied computer science from Columbus State University; and a B.S. in IT from MGA.  

Ben Bauman, for whom the award is named, was a long-time member, officer, director, and contributor to IACIS, and a member of the faculty at James Madison University. He made it his life's work to contribute to his profession and university and to mentor junior faculty and help them realize their potential.
