After transitioning from the business world to education, Luke Usry looks to expand on his new career by earning the University’s master’s degree in teacher education. The three-semester program is designed for professionals who already hold a bachelor’s degree to move into or expand a teaching career.

Family: “My immediate family includes my wonderful wife, Meghan, our one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Emmeline, and our rescue cats, Althea and Calliope.”
Employment: “I teach 9th grade literature and composition and serve as the English department chair at the Academy for Advanced Studies, Henry County's college and career academy. As a ‘second-career’ teacher, I love being able to use my background in the business world (defense industry, construction consulting, and photography) to help prepare my students for the rigorous demands they will face as a member of the modern workforce.”

He chose Middle Georgia State University for graduate school because … “I was seeking a program that would help me cultivate the skills needed to maximize my effectiveness as an educator while earning my teaching certification. As I am already teaching full-time, I needed a program that was designed to accommodate that schedule while still offering the level of professor support and quality instruction that would be expected in a more traditional class setting. Middle Georgia State University has delivered on both fronts, offering me a learning experience that has already begun paying major dividends in my practice.”

The MAT program is a rigorous one, as anyone would expect a year-long master's program to be, but the support shown by my professors has given me the confidence to push my learning and teaching practices to new heights.”

In five years … “I see myself still teaching ELA at the Academy for Advanced Studies. By then I would like to have earned my education specialist's degree, if not a doctorate. With my background in the business world, I am very interested in soft-skill development and how it can be integrated into traditional curriculum.”
