After transitioning from the business world to education, Luke Usry looks to expand on his new career by earning the University’s master’s degree in teacher education. The three-semester program is designed for professionals who already hold a bachelor’s degree to move into or expand a teaching career.

Full Name: William Luke Usry.

Age: 34.

Hometown: Byron.

Residence: Covington.

Family: “My immediate family includes my wonderful wife, Meghan, our one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Emmeline, and our rescue cats, Althea and Calliope.”

Employment: “I teach 9th grade literature and composition and serve as the English department chair at the Academy for Advanced Studies, Henry County's college and career academy. As a ‘second-career’ teacher, I love being able to use my background in the business world (defense industry, construction consulting, and photography) to help prepare my students for the rigorous demands they will face as a member of the modern workforce.”

MGA Degree Objective Master of Arts in Teacher Education.

Other Degrees: BBA in Management from the University of Georgia.

He chose Middle Georgia State University for graduate school because … “I was seeking a program that would help me cultivate the skills needed to maximize my effectiveness as an educator while earning my teaching certification. As I am already teaching full-time, I needed a program that was designed to accommodate that schedule while still offering the level of professor support and quality instruction that would be expected in a more traditional class setting. Middle Georgia State University has delivered on both fronts, offering me a learning experience that has already begun paying major dividends in my practice.”

His greatest experience as a Middle Georgia State graduate student has been … “The mentorship that my professors have offered. The MAT program is a rigorous one, as anyone would expect a year-long master's program to be, but the support shown by my professors has given me the confidence to push my learning and teaching practices to new heights.”

To him, greatness means … “Always striving to surrender my will to that of my maker.”

In five years … “I see myself still teaching ELA at the Academy for Advanced Studies. By then I would like to have earned my education specialist's degree, if not a doctorate. With my background in the business world, I am very interested in soft-skill development and how it can be integrated into traditional curriculum.”
