The 42nd annual Math Olympics was held by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Middle Georgia State University on Friday, March 8. More than 160 high school students from 16 high schools in Georgia competed in the all-day event, and teams from Rockdale Magnet School captured first-place honors at both the varsity and junior varsity levels.

Schools participating included the Academy for Classical Education, Stratford Academy, and Tattnall Square Academy in Macon, Baldwin County, Echols County, Harris County, Lee County, Sumter County, Tift County, and Worth County High Schools, Lowndes and Valdosta High Schools, Valdosta, Bradwell Institute, Hinesville, Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology, Conyers, Veterans High School, Kathleen, Killian Hill Christian School, Lilburn. Trophies were awarded to the top three varsity and top three JV teams, while the top three individual finishers received plaques.

MGA math professors and instructors, led by math faculty members Dr. Matthew Noble and Michael Hammock, devised the questions and problems used in the events, and then worked side-by-side with MGA math students to stage this successful and exciting event.

The varsity competition consists of a challenging 50-question individual exam, followed in the afternoon by ciphering, a fast-paced group event.  The ciphering contest pits four-person teams from each school, who must work together to answer a complex math question within two minutes.  The JV competition features a written exam with problems designed for students who have not yet taken trigonometry or calculus.
