Middle Georgia State University’s Office of Auxiliary Services has launched a new partnership with Bleckley County Schools through its Community-Based Instruction program. This initiative, similar to Project SEARCH at the University’s Macon Campus, connects students with developmental disabilities to opportunities for real-world workforce experience. It also strengthens MGA’s engagement with the local community, as faculty and staff serve as mentors and leaders for participating students.
The University began the program in January 2026, with 15 Bleckley County High School students participating.
“The skills they are developing — communication, responsibility, teamwork and job readiness — will serve them well beyond high school and open doors to postsecondary pathways that support independence and future success,” said Dr. Cindy Felkins, director of at Bleckley County Schools. “We deeply appreciate MGA’s willingness to invest in our students and welcome them as valued partners.”
Students in the Community-Based Instruction program gain hands-on experience working in the University’s Dining and Library Services departments. They also participate in classes designed to strengthen interview skills, financial literacy, and other essential life skills.
Amanda Funches, vice president for finance and administration, emphasized the value of the initiative. “We are excited to bring this program to our Cochran Campus. Providing these students with real-world experience is incredibly valuable, not only for Bleckley County Schools but also for Middle Georgia State University.”
