Macon, GA

Robert Hatcher, Sr., and Larry Walker, Jr.

Middle Georgia State University (MGA) will award its first-ever honorary doctorates this spring, recognizing two public service giants whose careers have made a lasting impact on the institution.

MGA will confer the Honorary Doctor of Public Administration degree upon Larry Walker, Jr. of Perry, the former majority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives, and Robert F. Hatcher, Sr. of Macon, a prominent banking executive and key figure in educational and economic development.

Both are former members of the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents who championed the consolidation of Middle Georgia College and Macon State College and envisioned the value the newly merged institution would have as a state university.

“These inaugural honorary degrees represent a meaningful milestone for Middle Georgia State University,” said Dr. Christopher Blake, MGA president. “Larry Walker and Bob Hatcher were instrumental in the evolution of this University. They exemplify the very best of public leadership, service, and commitment to improving the lives of others. Their careers reflect the values of Stewardship, Engagement, Adaptability, and Learning we strive to instill in our students, and we are proud to recognize their extraordinary contributions in this way.”

Larry Walker, Jr., an attorney and writer, is widely recognized for his leadership in public policy and economic development across Georgia. As a former member of the Georgia House of Representatives, Walker built a reputation as a thoughtful and effective policymaker, working to advance initiatives that supported education, business growth, and community development. In addition to his legislative service, Walker has provided strategic guidance on governmental affairs and helped organizations navigate complex regulatory environments. His work has had a lasting influence on the state’s economic and civic landscape.

Walker is a founding partner of the law firm Walker, Hulbert Gray & Moore, LLP, in Perry. In 2014 he received the American Bar Association Solo, Small Firm, and General Practice Division’s Lifetime Achievement award.

Robert F. Hatcher, Sr. is a respected banking executive, businessman, and civic leader whose decades of service have helped shape communities throughout the region. Known for his entrepreneurial success, Hatcher has also been deeply committed to philanthropy and public service, supporting initiatives in education, healthcare, and local development. His leadership has extended to numerous boards and organizations, where he has championed opportunities for growth and improved quality of life for residents across the region. He was the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce’s “Citizen of the Year” in 2005 and he chaired the MGA Foundation’s successful “Building a Legacy of Greatness’ fundraising campaign. He also was a founding member of the Robins Air Force Base 21st Century Partnership and is a former chair of Mercer University’s Board of Trustees.

Honorary degrees are among the highest recognitions a university can bestow, reserved for individuals whose achievements and service align closely with the institution’s mission and values. MGA will acknowledge both Walker and Hatcher during spring commencement ceremonies
