Through the 9/11 Day non-profit organization and AmeriCorps, Middle Georgia State University (MGA) has received a grant to support “Knights Serve for 9/11 Day,” which will give students, faculty, and staff the chance to observe the 25th anniversary of September 11 by participating in community service.
The national grant program supports K-12 schools, colleges, and universities in organizing volunteer projects for the National Day of Service and Remembrance, an annual observance established to transform the memory of September 11 into a day of unity and service.
MGA will use the award to help fund a first-responder appreciation event and a still-to-be-determined activity that will benefit a local organization. For the first event, members of the MGA community will volunteer to wash the cars of first responders and serve them breakfast. First responders are professional EMTS, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and others who are the first to respond to emergencies.
MGA will incorporate the event into its annual Day of Service, which gives students across all five campuses the opportunity to participate in coordinated volunteer efforts.
"Receiving this grant allows us to expand opportunities for our students to make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve while honoring the spirit of service that emerged in the aftermath of September 11," said Devereaux Lindsey, MGA’s assistant director for Student Engagement & Service. "By combining Knights Serve for 9/11 Day with our annual Day of Service, we hope to inspire even more students to give back and strengthen our connections with communities across the region."
The grant is part of a national effort to encourage volunteerism as a lasting tribute to those affected by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Since its establishment, millions of Americans have participated in service projects each year in observance of the National Day of Service and Remembrance.
