With a passion for aviation and a commitment to service, Zayron G. Rivera Alvarez is making the most of his Middle Georgia State University experiences. Rivera serves as a Knight Ambassador and student worker for the Student Life office. After graduating in spring 2029, he plans to pursue his goal of becoming a military fixed- and rotary-wing pilot.  

What motivates you?

My motivation comes from seeing the progress that results from hard work and sacrifice. Every step forward, no matter how small, brings me closer to my goals. Another thing that motivates me is the environment I create around me. I enjoy making people smile and laugh because I know not every day is easy. Sometimes a single conversation or laugh can completely change someone’s day. I believe failure isn’t something to fear- it’s a strict but valuable teacher that helps us grow. 

What’s one word friends/family would use to describe you?

Charismatic. Throughout my life, I’ve always tried to make people smile, feel comfortable, and know they have someone they can count on. My family and friends often describe me as charismatic because I enjoy creating a positive atmosphere and encouraging others to be their best. Even if it’s just through a few words of support, knowing I’ve helped someone move closer to their goals is incredibly rewarding. 

What’s something you’re proud of during your time at MGA?

I am proud of the new friends/family I have made. Stepping into a new chapter of my life was definitely something challenging, yet fun. Meeting people who welcome you with smiles and guide you and help you pave your path is something that everyone should receive when arriving into college life for the first time. I am proud that from learning from those people, I was able to become a person who can create a positive environment where new prospective students are able to feel comfortable and more excited than nervous to attend college. 

What’s been your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge has been effective time management. Becoming more independent requires more planning and consideration of all your classes. Even though there are amazing campus activities you may want to attend you also have to prioritize your assignments that might be due instead of hanging out with friends. Now of course there will be plenty of other time to have fun, the earlier you get your work done, the freer time you have! I’ve learned that procrastination is a college student’s biggest enemy; don’t fall into the temptation. Finish the tasks that will get you to your final goal before anything else!

What does “finding greatness” mean to you?

Finding greatness means becoming successful without losing sight of who I am. It means striving to be humble, honorable, adaptable, intelligent, and forgiving while making a positive impact on the people around me. If I can become that person while accomplishing my goals, I’ll know I’ve found my greatness. 

What’s next for you after MGA?

After MGA I plan to join the United States Army and become a warrant officer and earn my Army rotary-wing qualifications and continue building my aviation experience. Reaching my ultimate goal of being able to fly everything that flies. Having both airplane and helicopter ratings will give me endless opportunities to do what I love, seeing the sunset or sunrise from the cockpit is one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had, and it’s a reminder of why I fell in love with aviation.
