What was life like for students at the historic Cochran Campus of what is now Middle Georgia State University?
Soon you’ll have a chance to find out. Roberts Memorial Library will host a historical walking tour of Middle Georgia State University’s (MGA’s) oldest campus on Monday, October 26, as part of National Archives Month.
The tour begins at 7 p.m. at the Roberts Memorial Library front desk and is free and open to the public. No registration is required.
Participants will walk the Cochran Campus while exploring its history through photographs and other materials curated by the library. QR codes along the route will allow participants to view historical images on their phones. An iPad will be available for those who do not have a phone.
“This is an opportunity to see the Cochran Campus in a different way,” said April R. Warren, coordinator of Library Collections for the MGA Library. “We want people to learn not only how the institution has changed, but what life was like for the students who were here before us.”
MGA’s Cochran Campus was once a standalone college that began in 1884 as a denominational institution and eventually evolved into Middle Georgia College some 45 years later.
In 2013, Middle Georgia College and Macon State College merged to become what is now Middle Georgia State University. Roberts Memorial Library maintains an archive of artifacts and information related to Middle Georgia College (MGC) and its predecessor institutions.
For those who cannot attend the tour but have questions about MGC history, the archives staff provides reference assistance by phone and email. Appointments also can be made to visit the MGC Archives.
