who was consensually impregnated by the love of her life, her boyfriend, the Duke realizes just
how ridiculous one of the laws is. The lady’s boyfriend, Claudio, had been arrested and was
awaiting execution because he was found guilty of breaking the law claiming that premarital sex
could be punishable by death. Duke Vincentio quickly devised a plan to try and get Angelo to
change his mind by attempting to trick him into doing exactly what he sentenced Claudio to
death for: premarital sex. Duke Vincentio sets up his plan to have Claudio’s sister, Isabella, agree
to spend a night with Angelo in exchange for Claudio’s life. Unbeknownst to Angelo, Duke
Vincentio has arranged for Angelo’s ex-fiancée, Mariana, to be the one to actually show up and
pretend to be Isabella. Angelo easily fell for the bed-trick and did not fulfill his promise to
Isabella. The Duke’s plan had momentarily failed. Ultimately, the Duke’s motivation to set forth
this trick was not because he is kind and benevolent, but rather to appear as such to Claudio’s
Sister, Isabella.

Once Again Duke Vincentio has devised a trick within a trick. Upon meeting with
Isabella Duke Vincentio decided to make it his ultimate goal to trick her into marrying him. In
the paper “Shakespeare’s Fantastic Trick: Measure for Measure” written by Marvin Rosenberg,
he states "After meeting Isabell only twice, and even though the Duke asserts himself as a
“reserved, philosophic recluse, above loving”, The duke plans a great public reveal of all of his
tricks and expects Isabella to accept his marriage proposal." The Duke expects his tricksto make
him seem as powerful and benevolent.
