Co-Curricular Learning
Study Abroad
In a world where nearly 3.8 billion people use the internet, our
neighbors are not just across the street, they often are literally
around the globe. Yet while technology has made the world
smaller, face-to-face interaction can still be life changing.
Study abroad has been available at most universities, including
ours, for some time. But this past year, we sought to make it
accessible to students who might not have the means — or the
time — to spend thousands of dollars or several months
overseas.
This summer, we o ered our first service-learning trip to the
Caribbean. Approximately 25 students set sail aboard a cruise
ship as part of our first “Knights Impact” trip to the Dominican
Republic.
There, they engaged in projects ranging from planting trees to
tutoring youngsters to helping provide access to clean water to
working at a co-op. At a price point and time commitment many
of our students can a ord, our service learning provides an
opportunity that may be exactly the type of perspective-
changing educational experience that makes our students
better neighbors, both at home and abroad.
