RECLAIMING THE NATIVE SOUTH

Featuring Joy Harjo, U.S. Poet Laureate (2019-22)

SoAL’s 2023 Reclaiming the Native South Arts Festival seeks to re-orient our understanding of “the South” by exploring the rich, deep roots of Native American culture and arts in the Middle Georgia region and beyond. The festival will feature acclaimed Indigenous literary, visual, and performing artists. All events are free and open to the public. Check out the full Arts Festival schedule below.

MGA Student Art Exhibition Opening (exhibition runs through April 6)

Description: The 2022-2023 Student Art Exhibition is a juried exhibition featuring Middle Georgia State University art students. In addition to the opening in Cochran, there will an opening and awards celebration in Macon on April 10th to reveal winners in categories such as 2-D design, 3-D design, student choice, as well as best of show.

Ombaska Composers of Native American Music against Cultural Stereotypes

Lecture and Reading by Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle (Eastern band of Cherokee Indians)

Description: Clapsaddle is author of the nove Even as We Breathe, which tells the coming-of-age story of Cowney Sequoyah, a nineteen-year-old Cherokee boy who finds himself entangled in dangerous mysteries in Asheville's grand Grove Park Inn in the midst of World War II. Author Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle will read from and discuss writing this award-winning novel, and she will also be available to sign books.
