Library Philosophy

Making Connections

  • We prioritize academic confidence and academic freedom.
    • Students are encouraged to find confidence in academic research fostered by our commitment to the cultivation of information and literacy skills.
    • There is intrinsic value in student contributions and knowledge. We strive to empower students to view themselves as valuable academic peers with unique perspectives.
    • Students are encouraged to act as empowered participants in their education and to actively engage as contributors and creators rather than as passive recipients of information.
    • Students and faculty have the right to engage in intellectual debate, research, study, and the expression of their views without fear of censorship and retaliation. Statement of Principles Regarding Academic Freedom and Freedom of Expression
  • We prioritize supportive spaces and environments for exploration and learning.
    • Commitment to the promotion of access to information is a core principle. Our library strives to create inclusive spaces where all individuals can freely engage with all types of information.
    • Access to library and research services should be similar for in-person and distance learners.
    • Fostering a supportive community atmosphere that prioritizes both collaborative and independent learning and exploration.
    • Showcasing faculty collaboration and sharing their scholarship demonstrates strong research and subject expertise as examples for both our students and our community.
  • We prioritize the cultivation of media and information literacy skills.
    • To effectively utilize information, we must understand how to locate, evaluate, and differentiate reliable and credible information.
    • Develop a robust understanding of search strategies for physical and electronic resources. Cultivate critical thinking skills that can be used to assess the credibility and reliability of the information.
    • Emphasize search techniques, critical evaluation, bias recognition, and logical reasoning.
